However, when these instructions are unsuitable, AI “backfires” by resulting in worse organizational performance than employees due to its unwavering adherence to incorrect instructions. Furthermore, when suitable instructions entail the expression of negative emotions as opposed to positive ones, AI’s performance advantage over humans is amplified. We provide causal evidence through field experiments in a customer service firm. This study both underscores potential value of AI in performing emotional labor and highlights its associated risks for organizations.

Subtitle: Artificial Intelligence, Emotional Labor, and Organizational Performance
Speaker Details: Associate Professor Nan Jia, University of Toronto, Nan Jia is Dean's Associate Professor in Business Administration. If the sampling distribution is unknown, then a Bayesian decision maker faces a complex balance between exploration and exploitation. We solve the stopping problem of sampling from a Normal distribution with unknown mean and unknown variance and a conjugate prior, a longstanding open problem. The optimal stopping region may be empty (it may be optimal to continue the search regardless of the offer one receives, especially at the early stages), or it may consist of one or two bounded intervals. While a single reservation price cannot describe the optimal rule, we do find a standardized reservation rule: stop if and only if the standardized value of the current offer is sufficiently high relative to the standardized search cost. We also introduce the index function, which provides a computationally practical way to implement the standardized stopping rule for any given prior, sampling history, and sampling horizon.

Subtitle: Search with Recall and Gaussian Learning
Speaker Details: Assistant Professor Sasa Zorc, University of Virginia, Sasa Zorc studies incentives in multi-agent systems such as healthcare and matching markets (both centralized and decentralized). Smart heuristics are heuristics applied in situations where they perform equally well or better than alternative models or strategies. In this talk, I first outline the major types of heuristics studied in the smart heuristics research program and demonstrate how and why they can be smart. I then explain the theoretical principles, such as the bias-variance trade-off and ecological rationality, that guide research of smart heuristics, and the main research methods, such as competitive testing and computational modeling, that have been applied to uncover and test smart heuristics. I aim to achieve two goals in this exposition: to reduce the bias against simple rules and heuristics held by many in business research and teaching, and to provide a principled introduction to those interested in but unfamiliar with how research in smart heuristics is typically done. Smart heuristics are a reminder that despite the preached superiority of “rational” and complex models, simple rules derived from human experience and built on our core cognitive capacities can still be the best solutions in the increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world we are living in.

Subtitle: Studying Smart Heuristics: Guiding Principles and Methods
Speaker Details: Professor Shenghua Luan, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenghua Luan is professor and principal investigator of the Risk and Uncertainty Management (RAUM) lab at the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Before joining the CAS, he used to work at Singapore Management University, Max Planck Institute for Human Development, and Tsinghua University. Shenghua’ research focuses on human judgment and decision making, covering topics such as decision heuristics and models, group behavior and decision processes, organizational and managerial decision making, cooperative and prosocial behavior, risk communications, forecasting, and artificial intelligence and human behavior. In his research, Shenghua combines descriptive approaches (i.e., how do people make decisions?) with prescriptive ones (i.e., how can we help people improve their decisions?), and uses a variety of methods (e.g., human experiment, large-scale survey, cognitive modeling, computer simulation, and analysis of archival data). Findings of his research have been published in top-tier journals, including Psychological Review, American Psychologist, Academy of Management Journal, Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. His book, written together with Jochen Reb and Gerd Gigerenzer, on heuristic decision making in the managerial contexts will be published by the MIT Press in 2024.
Type: Seminars & Despite their increasing popularity, the quantum neural network is quite counter-intuitive and difficult to understand, due to their unique quantum-specific layers (e.g., data encoding and measurement) in their architecture. It prevents QNN users and researchers from effectively understanding its inner workings and exploring the model training status. To fill the research gap, we propose VIOLET, a novel visual analytics approach to improve the explainability of quantum neural networks. Two novel visualizations, i.e., satellite chart and augmented heatmap, are proposed to visually explain the variational parameters and quantum circuit measurements respectively. We evaluate VIOLET through two case studies and in-depth interviews with 12 domain experts. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of VIOLET in helping QNN users and developers intuitively understand and explore quantum neural networks.

This is a Pre-Conference talk for IEEE 17th Pacific Visualization Conference (PacificVis 2024). My paper was accepted by IEEE TVCG track for presentation.

Subtitle: Pre-Conference Talk by RUAN Shaolun
Contact: scisseminar@smu.edu.sg
Speaker Details: , RUAN Shaolun, PhD Candidate,, School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University, Shaolun Ruan is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Computing and Information Systems at Singapore Management University (SMU). We prove that expected out-of-sample model performance—in terms of SDF Sharpe ratio and test asset pricing errors—is improving in model parameterization (or “complexity”). Our empirical findings verify the theoretically predicted “virtue of complexity” in the cross-section of stock returns. Models with an extremely large number of factors (more than the number of training observations or base assets) outperform simpler alternatives by a large margin.

Subtitle: Complexity in Factor Pricing Models
Speaker Details: Associate Professor Semyon Malamud, EPFL, Please click here to view profile
Type: Seminars & Workshops
Subject: Finance & Financial Markets
Audience: Academic CommunityNextWeb SMU Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/173437925MITB Virtual Information Session (Singapore)Online

This information session will be conducted virtually via Zoom. This demand places a higher challenge on computational resources. Moreover, even if these LLM theoretically support advanced fact-checking, efficiently adapting them for specific fact checking verification tasks remains a technical challenge.

Accordingly, the research work in this proposal is organized into two parts:

In the first part, we address the challenge of more effective infodemic surveillance. We innovatively study rumor detection and virality prediction within a unified framework, as these are critical aspects of infodemic surveillance.

The second part delves into claim verification solutions that leverage evidence-based reasoning. Here, we examine the capabilities of LLMs to engage in multi-step reasoning. By integrating these models with gathered evidence, we showcase their proficiency in accurately verifying claims.

In summary, we systematically study the issue of automated misinformation monitoring and verification systems, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed lightweight methods on real-world datasets.

Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Proposal by ZHANG Xuan
Contact: scisseminars@smu.edu.sg
Speaker Details: , ZHANG Xuan, PhD Candidate, School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University, Zhang Xuan is a Ph.D. candidate in computer Science at the SMU school of Computing and Information Systems, supervised by Professor Wei GAO. In equilibrium, the borrower's ability to refinance depends on the number of competing banks, the incumbent bank's relative cost (dis)advantage, and the average creditworthiness of borrowers in the local market. It is also driven by borrower search and switching costs. We find empirical support for the key predictions of our model in an administrative data set covering the universe of mortgages in Belgium.

Subtitle: Bank Competition and Bargaining over Refinancing
Speaker Details: Associate Professor Christophe Spaenjers, University of Colorado Boulder, Please click here to view profile
Type: Seminars & Workshops
Subject: Finance & Financial Markets
Audience: Academic CommunityNextWeb SMU Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/173381063Buy Now Pay Later and its Latent RisksMeeting Room 5-04, Level 5
Yong Pung How School of Law
Singapore Management University
55 Armenian Street
Singapore 179943
Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 12 – 1pm

Buy Now Pay Later has been lauded as among the latest trends in smart ‘ways to pay’, riding on the wave of digital disruption that has gained traction internationally. At the same time, concerns have been raised over harm to vulnerable consumers mired in unanticipated debt. This research facilitates a deeper understanding of the phenomenon from a bottom-up perspective through a survey of 400 Malaysian consumers, focus groups, and an interview with the Consumer Association of Penang. The article explores how digitalisation, payment by instalments and providers’ advertising strategies can collectively mask the risks for unsuspecting consumers. Insights from the analysis are used to inform proposals to strengthen the emerging Malaysian regulatory framework.

Malaysia is the first country in ASEAN to introduce consumer credit legislation. This has the potential to inform the development of regulatory frameworks in other ASEAN Member States. Yet as a pioneer in consumer credit regulation in the region, there are real risks that transplantion of laws developed for Western industrialised countries, without consideration of the contextual differences, may result in unintended consequences. Closer examination of their respective contexts suggests that there are fundamental disparities that are likely to exacerbate the harm that the poorest Malaysians face. The findings highlight the urgent need to address the underlying problem of poverty to avoid unintended consequences. The research further considers the regulatory architecture that can enhance or impede the effectiveness of the reforms.

Contact: ccla@smu.edu.sg
Speaker Details: Dr Vivien Chen is Senior Lecturer at Monash University. We enhance a climate stress testing framework, modelling direct losses across three layers: scenarios, economy, and financial. Contagion effects within the financial system are then considered using a general network valuation model, where various contagion channels are accounted for. We illustrate this model using an empirical case study of developing nations in southern, eastern, and southeastern Asia. Using NGFS scenarios, our findings indicate that financial firms exhibit resilience to transition shocks. These results are dependent on the network topology and valuation framework assumed. Additionally, we explore the policy implications of a carbon tax, revealing that the network can increase losses for financial firms.

Speaker Details: Dr Raymond Pang is an Affiliate Senior Researcher at the CFA Institute, focusing on areas of sustainable finance and market resilience. To secure a sustainable competitive advantage, firms can implement an ecosystem strategy, which provides opportunities to build relational ties and capitalize on untapped customer loyalty. While the scholarly discourse indicated that trustworthy ties are imperative to implement successful ecosystems, a more nuanced understanding is lacking, resulting in a knowledge gap concerning real-world dynamics. Building upon the relational view, the study theorizes that trust in a firm and diverse physical, informational, and end-user layers in an ecosystem shape customer loyalty. To test the theory, the study pioneers a novel sample, which includes 50.3 × 106 firm-customer ties and covers the years 2021-2023. The initial outcome supports the hypotheses and contributes to the trust-as-competitive-advantage and ecosystems research.

Subtitle: Buoyed by Trust: Ecosystems and loyalty in container shipping
Speaker Details: MPA Professor in Maritime Business Martin Jes Iversen and Dr Christopher Dirzka
RSVP:
Type: Seminars & Workshops
Subject: Operations Management
Audience: Academic CommunityNextWeb SMU Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/172626400Governance of Digitalisation and SustainabilityMeeting Room 5-04
Level 5
Yong Pung How School of Law
Singapore Management University
55 Armenian Street
Singapore 179943
Friday, April 12, 2024, 3 – 4:30pm

Digitalization and sustainability are both widely discussed, but their nexus is underexplored and poses significant challenges for governments and industry alike. Unlike any other postgraduate analytics programme, the MSA’s data and analytics track goes deep into the application of data technology in the accounting domain. It is designed for professionals who are interested in developing expertise in applying data technology into their domain knowledge to solve business problems, especially in the finance and accounting sectors.

The availability of massive amounts of data has created a high demand for skilled data analytics professionals who can analyse such data and obtain the insight needed for informed decision-making. This is extremely vital to accounting and financial services firms as they have been dealing with large amount of information produced by their clients.

Join us for this event as our Faculty/Admission advisors share more about the programmes as well as access your suitability.

RSVP:
Reserve a seat: a43604.actonservice.com…
Contact: SOAMasters@smu.edu.sg
Type: Information Sessions
Subject: Accounting, Analytics for Business, Consumer & Social Insights, Business
Audience: Alumni, Current Student, Incoming PG Students, Professionals, Prospective Student, PublicNextWeb SMU Eventshttp://uid.trumba.com/event/173150711(IIE) BIG Office Hours: Jane Lim (Former VP Global Markets, TripAdvisor)The Greenhouse & Online
Wednesday, April 24, 2024, 3 – 5pm

Speaker Details: Jane is ex-VP of Global Markets, Tripadvisor, and was in charge of leading international consumer growth for the company up until end 2023.
