Design Thinking: Service Innovation as a Competitive Advantage

Institute of Service Excellence @SMU OVERVIEW Innovation, and in particular Service Innovation, is both a process as it is an outcome. How we do something determines what we get from it. Over the past 10 years, Design Thinking has emerged as the most powerful model for how organisations approach this field of innovation. Grounded on a strong divergent frame of analysis, Design Thinking is a specific methodology that organisations can embed to ensure a steady stream of innovative solutions. This programme will reveal how the Design Thinking approach allows for companies to re-think how they approach planning and execution. For example, Design Thinking allows for the re-perceiving of existing practices like benchmarking and instead refocuses the process on uncovering insights rather than solely for comparisons. Another example would be the deliberate use of “labs” for innovation where it is not only about technology but also about thinking differently about the future. As an immersive two-day workshop where participants will get a practical… Fee(s): Please refer to https://ise.smu.edu.sg/service-innovation. FULL FEE: SGD 2,675 (incl. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) – Interpretable Machine Learning

Alumni After a brief look at the challenges facing machine learning adoption into mainstream applications, we will dive into the details of explainability and what this means for regulation and business. Specifically, we will be looking at why XAI is important, what properties it should exhibit and the scope. We will then look at some models that are ‘naturally’ explainable with some relevant financial use cases to help illustrate the points. Next, we will look at some model agnostic methods that can be applied to deep learning architectures and do a deep dive on two specific methods that are being widely adopted. Finally, we will look at the need for a quality assessment framework around explainability and the current best practice. Contact: mitb@smu.edu.sg. Asymmetrical Neighbours: Borderland State Building between China and Southeast Asia

School of Social Sciences Is the process of state building a unilateral, national venture, or is it something more collaborative, taking place in the interstices between adjoining countries? To answer this question, Asymmetrical Neighbors takes a comparative look at the state building process along China, Myanmar, and Thailand's common borderland area. It shows that the variations in state building among these neighboring countries are the result of an interactive process that occurs across national boundaries. Departing from existing approaches that look at such processes from the angle of singular, bounded territorial states, the book argues that a more fruitful method is to examine how state and nation building in one country can influence, and be influenced by, the same processes across borders. It argues that the success or failure of one country's state building is a process that extends beyond domestic factors such as war preparation, political institutions, and geographic and demographic variables. Rather, it shows that we sho… Contact: socsc_seminar@smu.edu.sg. Operations Management Research Seminar

Area Administration We consider the intraday scheduling problem in a group of Orthopaedic clinics where the planner schedules appointment times given a sequence of appointments. We consider patient re-entry – where patients may be required to go for an X-ray examination, returning to the same doctor they have seen – and variability in patient behaviours such as walk-ins, lateness, and no-shows, which leads to inefficiency such as long patient waiting time and physician overtime. Our data indicates that patient re-entry and variability in patient behaviour are prevalent in practice. We formulate the problem as a two-stage optimization problem, where scheduling decisions are made in the first stage. Queue dynamics in the second stage is modelled under a P-Queue (Bandi and Loke 2018) paradigm which minimizes a risk index, representing the chance of violating performance targets such as patient waiting times. The model reduces to a sequence of mixed-integer linear optimization problems. Simulations shows that our model can achieve as m… Subtitle: Intraday Scheduling with Patient Re-entries and Variability in Behaviours. Achieving Mastery and Success Through Growth Mindset: Part II (Intake 3)

ACE SMU Academy Decades of research has led Psychology Professor at Stanford University, Carol S. Dweck, to identify people with two types of mindsets – fixed mindset and growth mindset.  People with fixed mindset believe that talent and intelligence are predetermined by nature and in finite supply, while people with growth mindset believe that everyone has the capacity to grow, develop and improve their intelligence and ability over time through deliberate practice. This is validated by advances in neuroscience on brain plasticity, which indicate that brains do change physically, functionally, and chemically throughout our lives and the changes are manifested through our abilities. Our brains are malleable and can be strengthened for further growth and development at all ages through mental exercises, much like how physical exercises can build muscles. The converse is true. Neural pathways that are underused will weaken or be replaced over time. Professor Dweck’s studies revealed a significant correlation between how… Fee(s): Please refer to fees and funding at https://academy.smu.edu.sg/index.php/achieving-mastery-and-success-through-growth-mindset-1001. Finance Research Seminar

Area Administration We document a new stylised fact foreign exchange markets: intraday currency returns display a systematic ‘W’ shaped return pattern over the course of the trading day, resulting from a depreciation of the U.S dollar in the hours that precede major fixings (Tokyo, Frankfurt, London) and appreciation thereafter. This pattern is a systemic feature of the data being present in each day of the week, month of the year, each of the 20-years in our sample, and is unrelated to special days such as macro or central bank announcements. Rationalising this finding we develop a model were investors with heterogeneous demand functions trade pre and post fixing with an intermediary who provides intraday liquidity. Examining the central prediction of the model, we exploit quantities and prices of executed FX transactions to learn about mechanism of intraday intermediation in the foreign exchange market. Marketing Research Seminar

Area Administration In this paper, we study the differences in the effects of marketing mix variables, such as prices, non-price promotions, and assortment, on brand shares at different retail formats. Our conceptual framework rests on the presence of fixed and variable costs of shopping and has two building blocks: (i) The trade-off between these costs has implications for the different formats visited on different types of shopping trips; and (ii) the magnitude of fixed costs, that shoppers can justify investing on different trip types, influences the marginal sensitivities of brand shares to changes in marketing mix variables on those trips. Taken together, the building blocks provide predictions on how marketing mix variables differentially impact brand shares at various retail formats. We use Nielsen Homescan and store level data from 2011-2014 and analyze the top ten spending product categories across four retail formats - convenience stores, drug stores, supermarkets and mass merchandisers, in over 200 Nielsen markets. HR Analytics Certificate (Foundation Level) (Intake 12)

ACE SMU Academy As HR practitioners, are you able to forecast which employees are at risk of leaving? Can you help improve the organisation’s engagement level? Are you well equipped to drive better compensation and benefits design? Leading companies such as Google and Starbucks have adopted data-driven approaches to make decisions about their employees. Best Buy, an electronics retail store in the USA, found that a 0.1% increase in their employee engagement at a particular store translates into a US$100K increase in the store’s operating revenue. AT&T and Google found that, for their companies, the ability to take initiative, rather than stellar academic records from prestigious schools is a far better predictor of high performance on a job. These companies leverage on employee and other data extensively to help them make objective HR decisions. Multimodal Mobile Sensing Systems for Physiological and Psychological Assessment

School of Information Systems Monitoring human physiological and psychological condition plays a crucial role in smart personalized systems and applications. This is especially important in the mobile context where people are spending more time on their smartphone applications doing various activities such as working, social network, gaming, and studying. Knowing the psychological state and other contextual information (what user is doing under a certain circumstance), the systems can potentially provide with the adaptive user experience. Applications such as stress assessment, engagement measurement can help users not just to spend their time on the smartphone more efficiently but also to support more healthy living. This thesis demonstrates that it is possible to measure vital physiological signals (heart rate and heart rate variability) using sensors available on commodity smartphone, and to develop mobile sensing systems to assess psychological states that can be used for improving mobile user experience by (i) developing a core sensi… Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Defense by HUYNH Nguyen Phan Sinh. Gesture-based Profiling of Commonplace Lifestyle and Physical Activity Behaviors

School of Information Systems The widespread availability of multitude of sensors on personal devices (e.g. smartphones, smartwatches) and other cheap, commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) IoT devices in the environment has opened up the opportunity for developing applications that are targeted at improving daily lifestyle of individuals. Moreover, there is a growing trend of leveraging ubiquitous computing technologies to improve physical health and well-being. Several of the lifestyle monitoring applications rely primarily on the capability of recognizing contextually relevant human movements, actions and gestures. As such, gesture recognition techniques, and gesture-based analytics have emerged as a fundamental component for realizing powerful, personalized and pervasive lifestyle applications. This thesis explores how such ubiquitously available sensing devices and the wealth of data sensed from such devices can be utilized for inferring fine-grained gestures. Subsequently, it explores how gestures can be used to profile user behavior duri… Subtitle: PhD Dissertation Defense by Meeralakshmi RADHAKRISHNAN. Contact: sisseminar@smu.edu.sg. Risky Investments: How Local and Foreign Investors Finesse Corruption-Rife Emerging Markets

School of Social Sciences How do investors enter and navigate markets where there is a general lack of access to information and where the law is open to interpretation? Drawing on interview data with 100 research subjects in Vietnam’s real estate market, this article makes contributions to the literatures of economic sociology and development. First, looking at a diverse set of local, regional, and global investors, I theorize how market actors pursue different strategies to manage risky investments based on their proximity to state officials. Investors’ proximity depends on four processes: legal/regulatory, social ties, cultural matching, and stage of investment. Second, I highlight how multiple state-market relations can coexist within the same state. Investors’ varying levels of proximity to government officials shape their relationship with the state as one of patronage (predatory), mutual destruction (mutual hostage), or transparency (developmental). Heterogeneous state–market relations help account for the persistence of foreig… Contact: socsc_seminar@smu.edu.sg. Role of Effective Managers – Connecting the Dots! (Intake 9)

ACE SMU Academy At the transformational leadership level, where the span of control is larger and the focus is on the larger department or division, this module takes on another level. This is the level where there is stronger control over how the department/division will be shaped. In other words, on a personal level, this is the level where the need to develop and maintain business and professional networks takes on a more urgent tone. In addition, instead of managing workforce diversity, one now encourages it. Hence in this module, the focus is on how one can actively shape the direction of the division. The framework for this module focuses on larger issues that begin with understanding one’s role in the organisation as that of a super network connector, both for key stake holders within and outside the organisation to facilitate the seamless interaction between key internal and external stakeholders. In other words, the manager at this level is no longer only focusing within the organisation. Rewards (Compensation & Benefits) (Intake 13)

ACE SMU Academy Staff costs constitute the largest single expense item for most organisations. Faced with an increasingly competitive marketplace, shrinking margins and mounting budgetary pressures, one of the key challenges for organisations is: how do we extract maximum value, and achieve optimal effect, from every dollar spent on staff?  A significant part of the answer lies in having a comprehensive Rewards framework, aligned to corporate goals and values, integrated with the wider HR platform, and effectively managed with the objectives of driving performance and strengthening employee engagement. This module has twin goals: to provide a comprehensive understanding of the conceptual basis for effective Rewards frameworks and programmes (with emphasis on Compensation and Benefits), and impart an appreciation of the practical issues and considerations to be borne in mind when introducing Rewards interventions in real-world settings. Becoming a Whole Leader (Intake 9)

ACE SMU Academy Companies are increasingly focused on driving an aggressive growth agenda and prioritising innovation to deal with today’s fast moving, interconnected, complex, and globally diverse marketplace. As a result, expectations of leaders are higher than ever before. Whole leaders know how to leverage their strengths, but they can also recognise when a different approach is needed. Facilitating Innovation and Leading Change (Intake 9)

ACE SMU Academy “Innovation is the lifeblood of any enterprise.” Through this module, you will find out what that means in practice and how to be an entrepreneur without changing jobs. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned against ‘navel gazing’ – the “Hello Kitty” campaign fiasco and the Singapore’s “fish ball stick” story both illustrate the need to adopt a wider and more ‘strategic thinking’ approach. You will learn how to create an environment that encourages risk taking and enterprising behaviours overcoming the “kiasu” and “kiasi” culture. You will also learn how to reduce defensiveness and evolve a learning organisation culture, adaptive in surviving in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world, as well as apply strategic, “zoom out” Systems Thinking to avoid the “domino effect” of unintended consequences. After weighing risks and rewards, you will see opportunities for innovation and change. You will have fun learning from others and working on practical real-life challenges. HR Analytics Certificate (Foundation Level) (Intake 14)
